Reserves sign off with a win in the Witton Sunshine

The Reserves brought their season to a close with a 4-3 win at Witton Albion in the Bank Holiday sunshine. Jack OíLeary, Nelson Onwusiri and Francesco Frangillo with two were the FC scorers. Witton, who normally play on a 3G pitch had returned the favour of a game on the Broadhurst Park main pitch two weeks ago with a game on the Wincham Park grass. Witton went away with a 3-2 win in that game, FC United returning that favour.

FC United started brightly, in the fourth minute a Steve Affleck free kick from the half way line saw a cross field ball find the head of Onwusiri who was just wide with a header. The first goal didnít take much longer. On six minutes, Frangillo started a run with the ball from the right touch line, exchanging passes with Saem Son, his shot slid under the dive of the Witton keeper.

Witton had their share of possession throughout the first half but werenít posing a threat. Their end of season fixture list meant that this was a fourth game in eight days. Unfortunately that changed as half time approached. Two goals in as many minutes and another soon after the restart gave them a flattering 3-1 lead.

Unphased; the reds set about repairing the damage. A 57th minute free kick was partially cleared before Onwusiri fired home for 3-2. The equaliser came ten minutes later when Elliott Simoes hit the post and Frangillo fired home the rebound. Jack OíLeary scored the winner on 75 minutes from another free kick.

Claims for a penalty were turned down a minute later as Frangillo was fouled, seemingly inside the area but the referee ruled it was just outside. A powerful dribble through the Witton Defence by Steve Affleck could also have added to the score, his shot screwed wide.

In the end it was a successful end to the Reserves campaign and a grateful vote of thanks goes to the players that turned out in the May Day sun.
